What is a Youth Royal Round?

A Youth Royal Round is a shoot for the younger archers, to allow them to see their scores against others their own age. It is for youth 12 and under. This follows the Youth IKAC ages and ranges.

It consists of four groups of arrows:

6 arrows (no time limit) at 30 yards,
6 arrows (no time limit) at 20 yards,
6 arrows (no time limit) at 15 yards, and
timed round (30 sec.) at the 15 yard target with unlimited arrows

General Equipment Specifications

All equipment should be consistent with pre-17th century archery in looks and function. Both recurves or longbows of any material (including take downs) are allowed.

In the open divisions any bow allowed by the SCA target archery rules are allowed.

Compound bows are prohibited.

For sighting, bow limbs may be marked in the open division only.

There are no weight limits for target archery bows.

Arrows may be shot off a rest, the shooters hand, or a shelf.

Bow straps and lanyards may be used.

No stabilizers, clickers, kissers, or modern mechanical string releases may be used.

Nocking points are allowed in the open divisions.

Crossbow Division:

No center-shot or split-prod styles are allowed.

No compound prods or break-cocking styles are allowed.

There are no draw weight limits for target archery crossbows.

Rear peep sights may be attached. Front sights are not allowed.

Limb coverings are not required.

Slings may be attached to the crossbow, but may not be used as an aid in shooting.

Stocks made of any material other than wood which have openings that you can see in profile must have the openings covered or filled to appear more period.

Arrows and Bolts:
Shafts will be natural wood or cane only.
Fletching will be feather type only.
Nocks may be of any material.(except Traditional Handbow Division)
Only field points or target tips may be used.
It is recommended that crossbow bolts have either a cap or a ring around the end.

Targets and Scoring:

The target is a 60 cm FITA, five color face.

Scoring:
Gold=5, Red=4, Blue=3, Black=2, White=1.

An arrow/bolt that is touching the line between two colors (or the outer line) counts as the higher valued color; no color showing between arrow/bolt and line. Arrows/bolt passing through or falling out (bounce off) count as 3 unless their actual score can be verified. Archers may count and record their own scores but the Marshal In Charge should submit them.

Archers must declare that they are shooting for score at the beginning of their Royal Round and then shoot all of the targets consecutively.

No restriction is placed on the number of Royal Rounds that may be shot on any given day. However, only the three highest scoring rounds, per bow type, per archer, can be submitted and will be counted for a single day.

For Royal Round scores to be eligible for submission to the Scorekeeper, they must be witnessed and recorded by a warranted Trimarian archery Ranger.

Royal Rounds may be scored anywhere, anytime, a Trimarian archery Ranger and at least one other archer must be present to witness and record the score.
