Rules:
Proposed Shoot - Repeat from Summer 2013
From the fourteenth-century archery text produced by Taybugha l-Ashrafi l-Baklamishi l-Yunani during the time of the Mameluk sultanate of Cairo comes what was believed to be the five pillars of archery: accuracy, ability to inflict injury, to strike from a distance, to strike swiftly, and to remain unharmed. This challenge consists of five separate shoots, each based on one of these pillars, to become averaged into a single archer’s score.
Please read the SSAC General Rules, as these apply to all SSAC shoots. Below are the additional rules for this specific shoot.
Targets and Ranges:
Accuracy
Shoot consists of two ends, one shot at 20 yards (Youth: 15) and the other shot at 40 yards (Youth:30), the target is a standard 60 cm FITA target. Archers are challenged to put two arrows in each of three scoring zones. The scoring zones are white/black, blue/red, and gold. Each arrow is worth 5 but every arrow beyond two within a scoring zone counts as a miss (0).
Strike from a Distance
Archers will perform a flight shoot consisting of a single end with 3 arrows. Distance sets are measured beforehand and marked with flags before shooting. Scoring is 2 points for every 25 yards the arrow is shot beyond 100 yards (Youth: 2 points for every 20 yards shot beyond 40). So: 100-125 = 2 point, 125-150 = 4 points, 150-175 = 6 points, and ect, extending as far as you can shoot. Example if the three arrows where shot at 145 yards (4pts), 149 yards (4 pts), and 161 yards(6pts) the archers total is 14 points.
Strike Swiftly
Target consists of a 60cm target shot in two ends, one at 20 yards (Youth: 15) and one at 40 yards (Youth: 30). A standard 5 color FITA target can be used in this shoot, though the scoring will be different. Archers have 30 seconds to shoot as many arrows as they can. Each strike within any scoring zone is worth 3 points, regardless of color. If the archer scores with a single arrow, than any arrows shot beyond 6 arrows is worth a bonus of 2 points, regardless of if they scored. Example: Archer shot 8 arrows, scored on 5. 5 scoring arrows x 3pts (15) for a score and 2 extra arrows x 2pts (4) for speed bonus (total 19).
Remain Unharmed
To mimic the famous Parthian shot, the archer shots two ends, one at 15 yards (Youth: 10) and one at 30 yards (Youth: 20) facing away from the target with 6 arrows and turns to fire backwards toward it. Target is a standard 5 color 60 cm FITA target with standard (5, 4, 3, 2, 1) scoring.
Inflict Injury
Archer must demonstrating their ability to wound an advancing soldier by firing 2 arrows from each distances in succession 40, 30, and 20 yards at a knight (Youth: 30, 20, 10 yards). Target is a human silhouette with standard dimensions (see linked image) with scoring as follows: Arm-1, Body-3, Heart-4, Head-2, Face-5. This is shot as an un-timed advancing man, 2 arrows from each distance, then retrieve all at once. Shoot two ends of this.
Running the Shoot:
Each of the above is an individual shoot that does not need to be shot in conjunction or even on the same day as any of the others. Marshals can have archers work on one shoot to improve their average than switch to another at different practice. The archer must use the same bow and arrows to obtain the overall score (no switching to a very heavy bow and very light arrows for the flight shoot). Arrows touching the line on the target to count as the higher score. Once the archer has completed any of the five shoots a total will be calculated that represents their overall score. The scores are added together, so completing all 5 pillars will increase one’s score, though it isn’t necessary.
